Voynich Sculpting Part 3: "f48r"
The next installment in my “making of” Voynich Manuscript sculpture videos is the assembly of my flameworked glass leaves, stems and flowers inspired by the “leaf-hand plant,” also known as f48r.*
*For those who may be unfamiliar, “f48r” is the name of the Voynich Manuscript page. For this manuscript that we can’t read, the established way to differentiate its pages is to refer to a folio (f) by its chronological page number and then an abbreviation of whether the page faces front or back in the binding (either “r” for “recto” or “v” for “verso”).
In order to progress with this sculpture, I have also by necessity had to progress my glassworking skill and learn the techniques needed to realize my idea. After I made the first parts for this piece, documented in the links below, I have spent a lot of time practicing and working out various challenges in learning the techniques. With a subject so complex as the “world’s most mysterious manuscript,” it is only fitting to choose a complicated medium!
This piece is designed to be a lighted sculpture, combined with a porcelain base. Stay tuned for a video of the finished piece.
